What Are Blackheads And How Do They Form?

We have all had the unfortunate experience of looking in the mirror only to find the unsightly appearance of the all to familiar blackhead.  For me the main battle ground in the blackhead war has been my nose, but wherever they appear, blackhead removal becomes our main priority if we are to have clear blemish free skin.  But what exactly are blackheads and what causes them?

Blackheads form when our pores and hair follicles become clogged with sebum that is produced by the sebaceous glands and keratin, a type of protein that forms our outer layer of skin as well as  hair and nails.

Black heads are a kind of acne, the difference between a regular pimple and a black head is that the sebum/keratin mixture in a blackhead is exposed to air where as a pimple is not.  When the oily mixture that is clogging the pore comes into contact with air, the exposed oils are oxidized causing a change in color.  This process of oxidation is the same process that turns a banana black or a metal chair to rust when left outside.
